Original About Harlem Math Institute

Our Purpose:

We are here to inspire, educate, and entertain.  Basically, we want to give kids the understanding and mastery of both basic and advanced math principles to improve academic performance and prepare them for careers in math, science, engineering, accounting, finance, economics, business, design, and every other area where a strong math foundation is helpful.  We also want to bring a creative approach, enthusiasm, and non-traditional teaching techniques to help instill a greater appreciation for the wonders of mathematics and the world it opens up to us all!

Our Founder:

mk profile pic cropMalik King is a graduate of MIT and has been teaching and tutoring in a variety of capacities for more than 25 years.  He first began tutoring in the 8th grade as a way to help other students while sharing his love of math.  That interest in math drew him into competition, where in high school he took 5th place in the State of Georgia in the American Mathematics Contest (AMC12), earning him a place on the State’s math team, where he helped lead the team to its first top 10 finish in the country.  Upon graduation from high school, he co-founded a summer math school—the Math Instructional Institute of Atlanta—where he taught over 200 students over the next 3 years.  Later, while attending college at MIT, he created and for 4 years administered a full credit seminar on Leadership Development.  More than 20 years later, he continues to share his love of learning in general, and has worked with the New York City School Volunteer Program, Harlem Children Zone, Sponsors for Educational Opportunity, and other programs.  Over that time, he has tutored and taught hundreds of students everything from basic math, science, and reading–to standardized tests for college and graduate school–to leadership development, public speaking, and how to get a job on Wall Street.

Professionally, Malik has worked in management consulting and investment banking and is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and Chartered Market Technician (CMT).  He has focused on telecom/media, as well as macro strategy, and he still publishes articles on trading and investing.  He has a BS in Electrical Engineering from MIT and an MBA with Distinction from the University of Michigan.  Outside of education, Malik has also had a lifelong interest in martial arts, where he is a black belt in Taekwondo and was State Champion in Michigan in 2004.

Our Other Instructors:
